Bob took me out to pick up some lumber and a couple things at the hardware store. The lumber yard was just stuffed with large South American timbers and lumber. This sign was from a single log.
We picked up these two boards to make a support for the cabinet in the kitchen. Very dense south american hardwood - the boards must weigh 15 lbs each. They're 2" thick, and around 14" wide. Such lumber in the US would probably cost at least $30 each. We paid 21000 Guarani - about $6 for those two slabs and a third lesser quality board we needed.
Good tools are pretty scarce in Paraguay. I did salivate a bit at this joiner. The bed of it was over 12" wide - no toy 6" joiner.
On the other hand, I don't think this extension ladder has any rating, let alone a ANSI type I rating to give Bob or I some confidence working on it.
It has nice mortise and tendon construction, but as you can see from the reference fingers in the picture, the sides are barely bigger than 1 x 2 stock. The ladders we've been using at the church are a little bit stronger, but not much.
There are low and high performance vehicles on the roads and main highway. Here's a one horsepower version.
Here's the high performance two horsepower version navigating a four lane road.
The chickens from across the street had come home to roost at the Bostons' house when we returned. For those guys trying to figure out how to take the trash out here, the basket behind the chickens is where it goes for pickup. The baskets are elevated so dogs don't get in the trash.
